McDreamy, as he is fondly called, has paid his dues in the automotive world, rising from a celeb driver to a race-car champion.
As with many car collectors, obsession with cars starts from a pretty young age. In this interview with Architectural Digest, Dempsey talked about growing up in Maine and watching different cars drive by in the ’70s. He recollected how his father, who did short-track racing in Maryland, would come back home with a Matchbox car for him, and how he also did the same for his son who loves cars. 10 1963 Porsche 356
The 1963 Porsche 356 will always be Dempsey’s first love. He got the Porsche 356 when he was barely 21 from his pay for his first big break in Hollywood when he featured in the movie Can’t Buy Me Love.
In this interview with Driving.co, Patrick Dempsey revealed that his Porsche 356 Speedster was the same car used in the movie Top Gun. Although the car is pretty tiny, it is also easy to drive. Dempsey has mentioned time and again that he has no intention of letting go of the Porsche 356 Speedster.
9 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE
The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE is another keeper. Dempsey, a father of twins, got the Mercedes-Benz 280SE as a gift from his wife for his 40th birthday. The Mercedes-Benz, which gets its power from a 2.5L, six-cylinder engine, is a fun, elegant, and classic car.
In the Architectural Digest interview, Dempsey disclosed that the 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE is his kids’ favorite, and which they refer to as “Princess Car.”
8 1973 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Many Porsche lovers would agree that the 911 GT3 RS is one of the greatest cars ever made by the carmaker. McDreamy uses the Porsche 911 GT3 RS as his daily driver, so we know it’s not going anywhere, anytime soon.
As a race-car driver, it’s not surprising that Dempsey would fall in love with a powerful car like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS that delivers up to 520 horsepower with its 4.0L engine.
7 1982 Porsche 911 SC
Dempsey occasionally sells his cars once he grows bored of them, and gets a new collection. However, most of his Porsches are still in his garage and the 911 SC is one of them.
Although Dempsey is not big on modifications, the Porsche 911 SC comes with a 3.6-liter engine upgrade. McDreamy is all about the power rather than aesthetics, comfort, and cruising when it comes to the Porsche 911 SC.
6 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing
Patrick Dempsey is not your regular celebrity that drives a Range Rover or some big luxury SUV to go to the grocery store. Dempsey prefers to run errands with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing. This supercar is the second Mercedes product to feature the gull-wing doors, with the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL being the first.
The 563 horsepower that the SLS delivers with the 6.2L V8 engine is not too much for the prolific race-car driver to handle. Speaking to Architectural Digest, Dempsey says that his SLS really comes alive after 80 mph, but roads in the United States don’t give room for much of that.
5 Panoz Esperante GT
The Panoz Esperante GT is perhaps the rarest car in Dempsey’s garage in that only 33 units were made. This custom-made coupe holds a lot of sentimental value for Dempsey because he named it after his daughter, Tallulah.
Panoz describes the Esperante GT as a work of art that offers “unrivaled levels of endurance and high-intensity performance”. This barely street-legal sports car pumps out up to 420 horsepower with its supercharged V8 engine.
4 Jaguar XK120
Another rare gem in Dempsey’s garage is the Jaguar XK120. This ultra-cool sports car has a gray exterior with a red interior that gives off an aura of luxury. It’s no wonder Ranker voted it as one of the top 20 coolest celeb cars of all time.
With the capability to hit 135mph, the Jaguar XK120, which is now worth over $100,000, caught the attention of many celebrities including Patrick Dempsey.
3 1972 Jaguar E-Type Coupe
Hollywood’s love affair with the Jaguar E-Type Coupe didn’t start with Patrick Dempsey and it certainly won’t end with him. Besides seeing the Jaguar in movies such as the Austin Powers series, Harold and Maude, and The Avengers (1998), you will also find it in McDreamy’s garage.
In the sit-down with Architectural Digest, Dempsey says he still has the V12 convertible, which offers the nimblest and smoothest drive. The 2005 sexiest man alive added that the Jaguar E-Type Coupe is a very sexy car.
2 Ferrari Daytona
While the Ferrari Daytona is not one of Dempsey’s favorites, there’s no denying that it’s still a great ride. It comes with a big 4.4-liter V12 engine that pumps out over 352 hp.
In a chat with Vanity Fair, Dempsey describes the Daytona as a sculpturally beautiful car, but not practical enough for a daily driver.
1 Mercedes SL Roadster
A prototype of the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster was first unveiled at the New York Auto Show in 1954, and over the years, it has caught the eye of some of Hollywood’s finest including Patrick Dempsey.
Apart from its aesthetic appeal, the Mercedes SL Roadster was popular for its one-of-a-kind servo-assisted drum brakes. The suspension, steering, and engine were installed on a detachable subframe, making it not all that different from modern vehicles.
